Gustav Klimt - Portrait of Adele
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter who is known for his symbolism and portraits of women. Born in 1862 he was one of 7 children with 2 of his brothers also becoming artists. Gustav studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts along with his brother Ernst. While he enjoyed fame as a mural painter, he also was criticized for the radical and symbolic paintings which were to to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. That was his last commissioned work. Klimt became a founding member and president of the Vienna Secession which exhibited unconventional art in many forms.
Klimt's Portrait of Adele painting, which took three years to complete, was commissioned by the wealthy industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, who made his money in the sugar industry. The painting measures 54 by 54 in and is composed of oil paint and silver and gold leaf on canvas. Ferdinand Bloch Bauer favored the arts, especially Klimt, and commissioned him to complete another portrait of his wife Adele in 1912. Adele Bloch Bauer was the only person to be painted twice by Klimt.
