Alphonse Mucha 1860-1939 Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinctive Art Nouveau style. Mucha became a chorister at the Saint-Peter’s Cathedral in Brno, where he received his secondary school education. It is there that he had his first revelation, in front of the richness of Baroque art. He later moved to Paris and continued his studies in art and worked producing magazine art and illustrations. It was then that he produced a lithograph for famous Paris actress Sarah Bernhardt who liked the poster so much she signed him to a 6 year contract. Mucha's art quickly became popular and he produced a flurry of paintings, posters and advertisements in what was initially called Mucha Style but later became know as Art Nouveau.
Mucha enjoyed a successful career until the rise of fascism in the late 30's when his work became viewed by some as reactionary. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939 and became ill during his interrogation. He was released but later died of a lung infection in Prague on 14 July 1939.
