Gustav Klimt 1862 - 1918 Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter, whose primary subject was the female body. This painting was done between 1907 and 1908 during the highpoint of his "Golden Period", when he painted a number of works in a similar gilded style. Klimt's use of gold was inspired by a trip he had made to Italy in 1903 and he started to make unprecedented use of gold and silver leaf in his own work. Unlike some of Klimt's works, "The Kiss" painting was enthusiastically received and is considered his most famous work.
