Wassily Kandinsky Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky 1866-1944 was an influential Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting one of the first purely abstract works. At the age of 30, Kandinsky gave up a promising career teaching law and economics to enroll in art school in Munich. He was especially taken by form and color analysis and created paintings he referred to as compositions. After a period of travelling Europe, Kandinsky moved back to Munich and lived there for a time with his mistress Gabriele Munter who was also an artist. Often referred to as "Houses in Munich", Kandinsky "Munich-Schwabing with the Church of St. Ursula" was painted in 1908. This early work is defined as expressionism and shows Kandinsky's early artistic growth where color is presented independently of form.
